Trenching FOCIC - runs of less than 1000 feet (304 m)
This technique is used for runs of less than 1000 feet. The length of the cable/FOCIC should be the length of the
trench PLUS 15 feet (4.6 m) for every pedestal. Leave sufficient cable/FOCIC at the upstream end to accommodate
termination to the splice point. When placing and cutting the cable/FOCIC, keep track of the upstream end – the
tap must have a correct upstream orientation for the system to operate.
Use a tractor to make a trench 18 in. (45 cm) deep along the route. Make sure the trench bends are not tighter
than the FOCIC bend radius. Back-pull the cable/FOCIC into the trench.
Set the pedestal locations
Place the cable/FOCIC in the trench. Starting at the end away from the reel, raise a half loop of FOCIC with its
crest two feet above the ground at every pedestal location. Use a sawhorse with its legs cut to a height of 25 in. (63
cm) to support the cable at that height.
