Networking
In addition to using your P
owerBook’s built-in L
ocalT
alk port to
access a L
ocalT
alk network, you can also access another network
type
—such as Ether
net or T
ok
en Ring—if you have a Duo Dock II,
which has a built-in EtherT
alk port, or you have installed the
appropriate NuBus card in your dock. The first time you use the
other network, you must open the Network control panel and
select that network type.
Once you have made a selection, the P
owerBook remembers it
whenever the P
owerBook Duo is dock
ed. Whenever the
PowerBook is not dock
ed, L
ocalT
alk is the network type.
For more infor
mation about setting up and using your dock with
an Ether
net network, see “Using your Duo Dock on an EtherT
alk
Network” later in this guide.
Modem
If you want to use an exter
nal modem with your P
owerBook Duo
System, connect the modem cable to the Duo Dock port mark
ed
with this icon:
W
If your P
owerBook has an inter
nal modem, select the Inter
nal
Modem in the P
owerBook control panel before opening your
telecommunications program.
R
AM cache
If you have a Duo Dock II (or an upgraded Duo Dock), a 32K RAM
cache is built into the dock. This electronic cache function
automatically speeds up the processing of a P
owerBook Duo
when it is dock
ed. The cache speeds up your P
owerBook Duo by
keeping the most recently used data and instr
uctions in the cache
so that they can be executed instantly rather than reloaded from
memor
y and then executed. Because the cache is built-in, you
need not tur
n on or other
wise set this feature
—it works
automatically when you dock your P
owerBook Duo
.
If you have system problems
If your dock
ed P
owerBook crashes (the screen goes blank or fills
with gibberish) or freezes (the pointer doesn
’t move and input
devices don
’t work), press the power button on the back of the
dock once. Pressing once tur
ns the P
owerBook off
. Use the P
ower
On k
ey on your exter
nal k
eyboard to tur
n the P
owerBook on
again.
Pressing the power button erases any infor
mation you did not
save, but it allows you to restart the system and continue working.
See the troubleshooting section of your
PowerBook User
’s Guide
for more infor
mation about handling system problems.
