Cause

Remedy

1. Diaphragm ruptured.

Replace.

Pump loses internal oil

2. Leaky seal.

Replace.

3. Cover gasket leaks.

Replace or retighten.

5. Pump overfilled.

Remove excess oil.

Noisy gearing, knocking

1. Discharge pressure too high.

Reduce pressure.

2. Water hammer.

Install pulsation dampener.

4. Stroke length at partial setting.

Nondestructive knocking is characteristic of lost
motion pumps.

5. No oil or level incorrect

Replace or refill oil

Piping noisy

1. Pipe size too small.

Increase size of piping - install pulsation dampener

2. Pipe runs too long.

Install pulsation dampener in line.

3. Surge chambers flooded.

Replace with air or inert gas. If a pulsation
dampener is installed, replace diaphragm and
recharge.

4. No surge chambers used.

Install pulsation dampener.

Motor overheats

1. Pump overloaded.

Check operating conditions against pump design.

2. High or low voltage.

Check power source.

3. Loose wire.

Trace and correct.

4. Excessive discharge pressure

Correct conditions so ratings of pump are not
exceeded

1. Vacuum/pressure leak.

Find and correct.

Leak Detection – False
Alarm

2. Switch adjustment off.

Readjust switch.

3. Switch malfunction.

Replace switch.

1. Switch adjustment off.

Readjust switch.

2. Switch malfunction.

Replace switch.

Leak Detection – Failure
to Alarm

3. Power off.

Restore power.

4. Alarm wiring discontinuity.

Find and correct.
