Pressing the mode switch at this menu item invokes the drive self-test and offers a series of options from
which you may select. This is a standalone exerciser that may be used to diagnose problems within the
tape drive. Modes of operation include fixed/variable block transfers, spacing, differing
densities/compression modes and a means to control the running time. Records are written with
interspersed filemarks, rewound and read/verified. This cycle repeats for other densities supported by the
drive. During the whole testing process, you observe the error rate. If after using a new tape and cleaning
the heads, a high error rate persists, this would be suggestive of a drive problem. Other errors might
display the
KEY/ASC/ASCQ
bytes of a
Request Sense
command that are described in your
tape drive's user manual.
