Related procedure(s)

Task

“Ascertaining the data collection availability for a set of

servers” (page 45)

Collect data for a period of time that fully reflects
your business cycle(s).

“Calibrating power on actual systems” (page 86)

Check power calibration on existing servers.
Calibrate servers if needed, either automatically
or manually.

“Creating a planning scenario” (page 65)

Create a planning scenario containing existing
machines that you are planning to retire.

“Creating an historic utilization report” (page 51)

Run a utilization report that includes power to
estimate power consumption and costs for the
systems simulated in the scenario. Save this report
for later comparison.

“Creating a system” (page 73)
“Calibrating power within a scenario” (page 89)
“Power calibration calculations” (page 193)

Add one or more “what-if” servers to the scenario
to represent possible replacement choices. Provide
values for manual power calibration.

“Automated solution finding: System consolidation to VMs”

(page 91)

Move existing workloads that are present in the
simulation to the new “what-if” servers (in this
example by consolidating physical servers as
virtual machines on a VM host).

“Creating an historic utilization report” (page 51)

Run a utilization report that includes power to
estimate power consumption and costs for the
systems simulated in the scenario. Compare the
two reports created for this task.

Example: Estimating potential power savings

This simple example compares power consumption and costs on a few systems. You can easily
scale this example to a large network of servers by including more existing systems when you
create your scenario and by creating more replacement “what-if” systems to include in the scenario
for power use comparisons.

Collect data for a period of time that fully reflects your business cycle(s).

Make sure the systems for which you want to examine power consumption are licensed for Capacity
Advisor, and confirm that you are collecting utilization data from these servers. For this example,
a data collection period of 30 days was used to provide sufficient information for utilization
analysis. Your business cycle might require a longer period of collection to best reflect your
environment.

Check power calibration on existing servers

For HP servers with HP iLO technology, you can use HP Insight Control power management to
confirm that power is correctly calibrated. For servers without HP iLO technology, you can manually
calibrate power from the Matrix OE Visualization tab, using power calculators to determine the
correct idle and maximum power value to use in the calibration.
