Red-bellied
Woodpecker
About the bird:
A common
bird of the woodlands and sub-
urbs of the East, the Red-bellied
Woodpecker is easily recognized
by its black-and-white checkered
back and the male’s red
“mohawk.”
Range:
Resident in eastern half
of U.S.
About the photo:
Suet wedged
in a hanging log feeder creates
a great photo opportunity of
this handsome male Red-bellied
Woodpecker.
Photographed by:
Cherie
Layton with a BirdCam (original).
I love the set-it-and-forget-
it nature of photographing
with the BirdCam. I can set
up the cam and go about
my business knowing I'll get
some great shots. It can be
challenging to photograph
birds close up. They're so
wary of any movement that
it's nearly impossible to
frame great shots without
[the help of] a complicated
setup with a remote control.
The BirdCam makes all that
unnecessary. I like getting
shots of the birds just be-
ing birds — doing what they
naturally do — without the
added interference of know-
ing a human is nearby.
