Downy Woodpecker
Eastern Bluebird
About the bird:
These familiar
sparrows are often nicknamed “snow-
birds” because their plumage reminds
some of dark-gray skies over snowy
ground.
Range:
Common throughout North
America, but in Southeastern U.S.
only in winter.
About the photo:
This Dark-eyed
Junco hops in front of a BirdCam
while foraging for scattered seed in
North Carolina.

About the bird:
The smallest
woodpecker species inhabiting North
America, the downy is a common
sight at backyard feeders; it's more
abundant than its larger relative the
hairy woodpecker.
Range:
Common resident across
most of North America.
About the photo:
Compare the
Downy Woodpecker’s small size with
the larger hairy woodpecker (page 15).
Photographed by:

About the bird:
These birds can be
attracted to open yards with appro-
priate nest boxes and mealworms.
Range:
Resident in eastern two-
thirds of North America; migrates
south in bad winters.
About the photo:
A strategically
placed snag can be a great way to
get birds to pose for your BirdCam.
This excellent image of a male
Eastern Bluebird was shot using this
technique.
