Looking much
like a larger version of the Downy
Woodpecker, the hairy is a wide-
spread species of North American
forests and suburbs.
Range:
Resident across most of
North America.

Here the Hairy

compared to the smaller Downy
Woodpecker (page 11).

A striking oriole
of the desert Southwest, these birds
will visit backyard feeders for nectar
and fruit.
Range:
Summers in the Southwest
from southern Calif. to central Texas.

About the bird:
Formerly a
western species only, the House Finch
was inadvertently introduced in the
East when a small number of birds
were released in 1940 near New York
City. The red-colored finches quickly
adapted and expanded their range to
fill most of the continent.
Range:
Now a common resident
throughout U.S. and spreading into
Canada.
