Laysan
Albatross
About the bird:
This magnificent
seabird was first described based
on a specimen from Laysan Island,
hence the bird’s name.
Range:
Throughout the northern
Pacific Ocean, but most abundant in
the Hawaiian Islands.
About the photo:
Hob’s clever
camera placement resulted in many
memorable photos, including this
heart-warming image of an alba-
tross chick looking up at its parent.
Photographed by:
Hob
Osterlund with a BirdCam
(original).
Because albatross parents
build nests on the ground,
I mounted a BirdCam on a
wooden cutting board and
hid it under a tree to get
eye-level shots.
