An Identification Guide to Common Backyard Birds
PHOT
OS: JOHN RIUTT
A
Evening
Grosbeak
About the bird:
Evening Grosbeaks were named for the
false belief that they sing only at dusk.
In reality, these birds are very vocal
throughout the day.
Range:
Breeds in western U.S. and
southern Canada; irregularly found in
winter in the East.
About the photo:
In perfect pose
with the center bird looking back at the
camera, three Evening Grosbeaks dine
at a gazebo-style feeder in northwest-
ern Oregon.
Photographed by:
John Riutta
with a BirdCam (original).
As I live at the edge of a forest,
I can place my BirdCam in various
locations that would be otherwise
practically unobservable—deep in the
undergrowth, for example, or along
suspected paths used by mammals—
to capture images that I could never
hope to acquire with a conventional
camera regardless of how long I waited.
