If you use an external, EOS-dedicated Speedlite and focus cannot be
achieved with the AF-assist beam, select the center AF point.
3Selecting an AF Point

The AF point is used for focusing. The AF point can be selected
automatically by the camera or manually by you. In the Basic Zone
modes and <Q> mode, the AF point selection is automatic only.
In the <S> <R> <E> <W> modes, the AF point can be selected
either automatically or manually.

Automatic AF Point Selection
The camera selects the AF point automatically to match the subject.
•
Manual AF Point Selection
You can select any of the seven AF points manually. This is best when
you want to focus a particular subject, or to compose a particular shot
quickly.

Select one of the seven AF points by looking at it.
Basic Procedure for AF Point Selection

Select the desired AF point.

Look at the viewfinder or LCD panel
and press the

Press the
right, top, or bottom to select the left,
right, top, or bottom AF point
respectively.

To return to shooting, press the
shutter button halfway or press the
<3> button again.
