Soft Partitions: This is a type of meta-device created using part of a disk slice or other meta-device.
Multiple soft-partitions can share the same devices, therefore creating smaller partitions that share the
same larger device and can be easily, added, removed and resized.

Replication Database (or State Database): Every meta-device requires this database, describing the
meta-device itself. This database can exist in a disk slice of its own, or can share a disk slice with the
meta-device itself. More than one copy (or replica) of this database can exist on the same device, but
it’s usually a good idea to defined more than one replication database using different physical devices
in case of a disk failure.

Hot Spare Pool: A hot spare is one or more disk slice that is placed in a “pool”. Slices from this pool
are added to a meta-device automatically if one of the devices that make up the meta-device fails. A
hot spare pool may be assigned to one or more meta-devices for this purpose.
When selecting Solaris Volume Manager from the menu, you will be provided another list of options:
You will note that these options may be used not only to change existing SVM configuration, but also for
creating new meta-devices, which in turn can contain new or migrated filesystems.
Replication (State) Databases
Use this option to assign one or more databases to a disk slice. When selecting the option, you can select
an existing database to edit or remove, or add a new database:
Select Add New to create a new database, or use the arrow keys to select a line containing an existing
database and press Enter. A screen similar to the following will be displayed:
