44 Multi-Channel Television Sound

To record and play programs in stereo, use one of the connections shown, then follow the steps on pages
45-46. You could use the hookups shown on page 11 instead if you prefer and if your TV has right and left
Audio In jacks.

Your DVD/VCR can play tapes recorded in Hi-Fi (high fidelity) stereo, which produces a crisp, clear sound
from the left and right audio channels. Your DVD/VCR also can play tapes recorded in a second audio
(usually, that means your program is recorded in a second language). Of course, your DVD/VCR will play
tapes recorded in monaural (single-source) sound as well.
Your DVD/VCR also will record a video cassette in Hi-Fi stereo or in second audio, so when you play that
tape on the DVD/VCR, it will be in stereo or second audio.
Read the directions on this page to familiarize yourself with your DVD/VCR’s stereo and second audio
setups. Then follow the directions on page 45 to record in stereo or second audio, or follow the directions
on page 46 to play tapes recorded in Hi-Fi stereo.

Understanding On-Screen Displays

When you watch TV channels through the VCR, portions of the display shown below will appear when you
press DISPLAY/STATUS/EXIT.

If 2ND AUD or TV STEREO appears
here, your DVD/VCR is set to receive
a second audio or stereo broadcast.
(It cannot receive both at the same
time.)

If 2ND AUD or STEREO appears here,
the program you’re watching is avail-
able in second audio or stereo. This
indication is not available during tape
playback.
Even though a program is available in
stereo or second audio, you still must
program the DVD/VCR to receive or
record the program. Follow the direc-
tions on page 45.
