Neoview Virtual TapeServer (VTS)
The Neoview Virtual TapeServer (VTS) is a disk-based appliance that provides continuous backup
capabilities. The VTS enables the recovery of database objects to any point in time within the
supported recovery window. The VTS is an optional product and is not included in standard
Neoview platform configurations.
A VTS is connected to each segment of a Neoview platform. Backup data flows from each segment
to the VTS, and optionally to an integrated tape drive and cartridge loader. The data is compressed
as it is written to virtual tapes (disks) on the VTS.
When equipped with a VTS, the Neoview platform can automatically back up the database,
transaction log, and Transaction Manager infrastructure on a regularly scheduled basis. Database
and transaction log backups are used for point-in-time recovery, in case of dual disk failures or
user errors.
Transaction Manager infrastructure backups are used for system-level recovery in case of:
•
Multipoint transaction log disk failures
•
Loss of the Transaction Manager recovery catalog
•
Loss of the Neoview segment
•
Loss of the entire Neoview system
VTS-resident backup data can also be backed up to removable media for subsequent offsite
removal or can be vaulted electronically to a remote location. If a disaster occurs, the data can
then be restored from the offsite copy to a stand-by VTS and Neoview platform located at a
remote secondary site.
Because backup operations on the server are completely automated and all data recovery
operations are performed by HP, limited interfaces are provided for customer monitoring. Using
repository views, you can check the status of backup operations for all segments and view error
information. See
.
Using a browser, you can check the VTS System Status and view the VTS RMDR Service Page.
(See
.) However, this status information reflects only the VTS to which you
are connected. If your system has multiple segments, you will have multiple VTSs (one for each
segment), and you must check the status of each VTS individually.
Server-Based Removable Media for Disaster Recovery (RMDR) Software
Server-based RMDR software provides an extra layer of disaster protection for Neoview platform
data. Server-based RMDR software allows the Neoview VTS to implement a full-segment backup
of the underlying system data (Transaction Manager metadata, audit trail files, and critical system
data).
Server-based RMDR software is implemented as a set of automated batch jobs that:
•
Initiate and monitor online dumps
•
Identify a recovery point objective (RPO) time
•
Generate audit trail rollovers
•
Generate virtual tape, which can be transferred to removable media for archiving off site
•
Back up critical system-specific data
Whereas the VTS allows you to recover data to any point in time for the failure of a data disk,
the accidental deletion of a file, or an unrecoverable file-system error, RMDR tools provide
disaster protection for these additional scenarios:
•
Loss of any active audit-trail disk
•
Loss of the Transaction Manager
