Chapter 4 Creating a Wireless Network

Physical Address Displays the physical address of the network card used for the
network.

MTU

(Maximum Transmission Unit) specifies the largest packet size per-

mitted for Internet transmission. “Automatic” sets the

MTU

at 1500. Other choic-

es include “Automatic by

DHCP

,” which sets the

MTU

according to the

DHCP

connection, and “Manual,” which allows the user to set the

MTU

Wireless Access Point
This section of the Configure Wireless Access Point screen displays various set-
tings of the Router’s wireless connection.

SSID The

SSID

(Service Set Identifier) is the network name shared among all

devices on a particular wireless network. The

SSID

must be identical for all

devices on the wireless network. It is case-sensitive and must not exceed 32 char-
acters. Make sure the

SSID

is the same for all devices to be connected to the wire-

less network. The Router comes from the factory with an

SSID

already entered,

but it can be changed here. The default

SSID

can also be found on a sticker on

the bottom of the Router.

SSID Broadcast Select this check box to enable

SSID

broadcast. If activated, the

SSID

of the Router’s wireless network is broadcast wirelessly. To deactivate, click

in the check box to make the check mark disappear.

802.11 Mode Select the wireless communication standard compatible with
the devices to be connected on the wireless network from the drop-down list.
Options include 802.11b, 802.11g, or Mixed (allows both 802.11b and 802.11g-
equipped wireless devices to join the network).

Channel Select the appropriate channel from the drop-down list. All devices on
the wireless network must be on the same channel in order to function correctly.

Network Authentication Select the appropriate network authentication level from
the drop-down list. Options include Open System Authentication, Shared Key
Authentication, or Both.

MAC Filtering Mode Select the appropriate

MAC

filtering mode from the drop-

down list. Options include Disable, Allow, or Deny. If Allow is selected, click
New MAC Address, and, in the screen that appears, enter the

MAC

address of

the device to be allowed on the wireless network. If Deny is selected, click New
MAC Address, and, in the screen that appears, enter the

MAC

address of the

device to be denied access to the wireless network. If Disable is selected,

MAC

filtering is deactivated.
