EAN/JAN Characteristics
The European/Japanese Article Numbering system (EAN) is used for products that require a country origin. The UPC-A is a
subset of the EAN/JAN symbol. A UPC-A symbol is an EAN/JAN symbol with the first character set to 0. EAN/JAN has two
versions, EAN/JAN 13 (13 digits) and EAN/JAN 8 (8 digits).
EAN/JAN 13 is used to encode 13 characters. The first two characters represent the country of origin, the next ten characters
are data characters, and the last character is the checksum character. Country codes 00, 01, 03, 04, and 06-09 are assigned to
the United States for compatibility with UPC-A.
EAN/JAN 8 is an 8 digit version of EAN/JAN-13, which encodes 2 country characters, 5 data characters, and a check digit.
