Troubleshooting
Overview
The ARCoptix ANIR Spectrometer is an instrument that is designed for use in a laboratory or field
application with a minimum amount of maintenance. Since it is normally used with a source and
cuvette holder, we describe the maintenance and troubleshooting with respect to the entire system.
The user should refer to the documentation provided with the integrating sphere or source and sample
holder, as it is very possible that the problem is in one of these components, rather than the
spectrometer.
Maintenance
The ARCoptix ANIR requires a minimum amount of maintenance. If necessary, the unit can be wiped
clean with a damp cloth. The lamp in the source should be replaced on a periodic basis as described in
the documentation provided with the source. Typically, the lamp life is 1000-2000 hours, but this time
is dependent on the lamp and the degree of noise that can be tolerated in the spectrum.
Caution
There are no user-replaceable parts inside the spectrometer. Do not take it apart.
Troubleshooting Tips
Since the ARCoptix ANIR spectrometer is employed in a system that includes a source and a sample
holder or integrating sphere, all troubleshooting activities should include all components of the
system. Troubleshooting can be simplified with following guidelines:
In almost all cases, there is a single cause for the problem. As an example, a noisy spectrum can be
due to one or more of the following causes:
The lamp is weak.
The fiber optic cable does not make good contact with the spectrometer or the sample holder.
There is an internal defect in the spectrometer.
A fundamental knowledge of the role of each component in the system is extremely useful in
diagnosing the problem. It is also helpful to have spare components on hand to substitute for those in
the system.
If any aspect of the analytical conditions is to be changed, run a “before and after” test to
verify that the effect of the change is well understood. Do not consider any change as trivial.
