Reducing Slagging in Western Coal-Fired Utility Boilers

Description and Use

FuelSolv FMG2960 is a specially engineered chemi-
cal additive designed to reduce slagging in utility
boilers using western coals, and is being used in
numerous industrial facilities around the world,
including large coal fired utility boilers.

Slagging

Slagging occurs in the convection areas of the fur-
nace, and is caused by the collection of ash on the
boiler tubes and internal surfaces inside the fur-
nace, which in turn crystallizes and hardens,
thereby reducing the heat transfer efficiency. If not
corrected, it can cause damage to the internals of
the furnace when the slag breaks off and falls away
to the bottom of the furnace. In order to avoid
forced outages, plant owners employ down-powers
to remove slag during off-peak hours, thereby re-
ducing the unit’s availability for dispatch.

Application

FMG2960 is a special chemical formula that is
applied to the coal on the conveyor belt. After mix-
ing with the coal, it is injected into the furnace
along with the coal. The key to reducing slagging is
to reduce sintering – which is the coalescence of
deposited particles and bonding. As sintering pro-
gresses, it results in increasing deposition strength.
FMG2960 promotes crystallization at the ash
surface, which increases the slag porosity, and
promotes cracking at the surface of the ash,
thereby making the slag easier to remove with
soot blowers.

Implementation

GE provides all necessary plant assessment, chemi-
cals, and equipment for applications, to apply
FMG2960 to the coal on the conveyor belts. In addi-
tion, GE utilizes our Advanced Combustion Engi-
neering (ACE) methodology, which uses actual plant
data to assess the effectiveness of the application.
ACE uses GE’s InSight* monitoring and diagnostics
platform, and is available for both onsite and offsite
applications.
