RUNNING A DEDICATED SERVER
If you are lucky enough to have a spare computer on your network that
nobody uses, put it to good work! Set it up as a Descent 3 dedicated
server. This may help the speed of network games for all clients.
To start a dedicated server, install Descent 3 on the machine, and in the
Misc. tab in setup, type:
-dedicated dedicated.cfg
where "dedicated.cfg" is the name of the dedicated server configuration
file. This is a file you can configure yourself with various
commands. The commands are:
PPS
Sets the packets per second that the server
sends out. This should be the number of
packets that the server can handle; the clients
will set their own limits based on their
connections.
Timelimit
How long (in minutes) each level lasts
Killgoal
End the level after this many kills
RepsawnTime
How long (in seconds) it takes powerups to
respawn
Gamename
The name of the game
MissionName
The mission you're playing
ScriptName
The name of the netgame you want
ConnectionName
The name of the connection you want
MaxPlayers
The max numbers of players in the game
Say
The inputted message is displayed on everyones
screen
SendRotVel
If set to 1, does smooth interpolation on ship
rotations.
MultiSettingsFile
Loads the specified .mps (multiplayer
settings) file.
DisallowPowerup
Disallows the named powerup from your
netgames.
AllowPowerup
Allows the named powerup to be in your
netgames.
PXOUsername
Specify a Parallax Online userid to login with.
PXOPassword
Specify a Parallax Online password.
BrightPlayers
If set to 1, makes all the ships fully bright.
Peer2Peer
set to 1, uses the peer-to-peer network model
AccurateCollisions
If set to 1, uses polygon accurate
collision detection.
