Mottling (“noise”)
appears in the

shutter button is
pressed halfway.
Gain is increased to aid composition when the
subject is poorly lit and aperture is stopped down,
which may result in noticeable mottling when im-
ages are previewed in the displays. Images taken
with the camera are unaff ected.
The camera does
not focus. The subject is not suited to autofocus: Use focus lock or
manual focus (
P 93).
No face is
detected.
•
The subject’s face is obscured by sunglasses, a hat,
long hair, or other objects: Remove the obstructions
(
P 143).
•
The subject’s face occupies only a small area of the frame:
Change the composition so that the subject’s face
occupies a larger area of the frame (
P 143).
•
The subject’s head is tilted or horizontal: Ask the sub-
ject to hold their head straight (
