Engine Troubleshooting

Problem

Engine does not

turn

Seized engine

Hydrostatic lock (fuel

has entered crank-

case while vehicle

was standing or being

transported)

CONTACT YOUR DEALER. Seizure is a re-

sult of poor lubrication, inadequate fuel supply,

broken parts, or improper cooling.

CONTACT YOUR DEALER to correct cause.

Drain plug(s) located on lower crankcase for

emergency draining.

Engine turns but

fails to start

Faulty ignition

No fuel to engine

Flooded engine (nor-

mal situation caused

by too much choking)

Poor engine compres-

sion

Remove spark plug(s) and replace with new

plug(s). If engine still fails to start, check for

spark; if no spark CONTACT YOUR DEALER.

a. Check tank level and fill up with correct

fuel.

b. Ice in fuel line, filter, or pump. On the stan-

dard Polaris carburetor, the choke will not

function with the throttle depressed. See se-

cond item under “Probable Cause” of “Engine

continually backfires”.

Hold throttle open, crank engine several times

(may be necessary to change plug(s), howev-

er, the plug(s) may operate satisfactorily when

dried).

Running too lean a mixture (too small a main

jet will cause seizure resulting in loss of pow-

er). CONTACT YOUR DEALER. This indi-

cates a major engine problem which must be

repaired before engine is run.

Engine lacks

Incorrect clutching
Carburetor and fuel

Change and test operation.

Check fuel filter flow. Disconnect hose and

drain about 1/2 cup. Fuel flow should be

steady and encompass the entire diameter of

fuel line. If not, replace filter.

CONTACT YOUR DEALER.
There is no adjustment to change power out-

put. CONTACT YOUR DEALER.

Engine continually

backfires

Faulty plug(s)
Carburetor

Change plug(s)
Dirt or ice in fuel system. (Deicer should be

added to fuel at all times for assurance

against fuel line icing.

Engine requires

more than normal

pulls to start

Poor gasoline

Not enough fuel get-

ting to engine

Replace with “fresh” winter fuel.
