Testing for Power over Ethernet (PoE). Power supplied to net-
work devices over the CAT5/6 cable is named "Power over Ethernet"
(PoE). Many VoIP phones, IP cameras and access
points are powered by PoE instead of the traditional AC
outlet (the biggest advantage of PoE is you do not need to run sepa-
rate AC power). If the PoE is supplied by a PoE capable switch, the
power is on pairs 1,2 and 3,6. This is termed "PoE endspan" and will
light the PoE test LED green. If the power is supplied at the patch
panel (by what is called a "PoE injector"), the PoE is on 4,5 and
7,8. This is termed "midspan" and will light the PoE test LED red).
Higher power versions of PoE use all 4 pair.
PoE is 48VDC but devices that provide PoE usually supply a much
lower "discovery voltage" until they sense the proper load has been
applied. Use the Green jack or inline connection when testing for
PoE.
Keeping in mind the above, the following applies:
●
If the TVR1000 is connected to only one LAN device, it will
display all of the device's speed and duplex capability.
●
If the TVR1000 is placed inline between two LAN devices, it will
display the negotiated speed and duplex of the devices.
If 1000 MB/s equipment is communicating at 100 MB/s:
●
The other LAN device is a 100 Base-T.
●
There is a “Cable Fault.” A cable fault is when a wiring pair
is inverted (e.g. pair 1,2 is wired 2,1).
●
One or both LAN ports is capable of 1000 MB/s but has
been programmed to 100 MB/s (slowing down the link).
Important: If testing a PC, reboot after connection. Some PCs will
select their speed/duplex after detecting the connected device.
