14 DTA/EAS Considerations and Additional Information

DTA and EAS (EM ERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM ) CONSIDERAT IONS

Any headend using DTAs or EAS (Em ergenc y Alert Sys tem ) that includes the MEQ1000A mus t be s etup with one EH24A / EH244 /
EH244-IP being the “Mas ter” devic e and the MEQ1000A and all other additional Drak e Headend Produc ts (EH24A / EH244 /
EH244-IP / other additional MEQ1000A) being “Slave” de vic es .

DTA/E AS CONTROL : The D TA c ontrol is used w hen MEQ1000As are us ed to s upply the QAM s ignals to DTA s et top boxes . It
allows for an ASI s tream , generated by a PC to be input to the headend’s Master unit. This control allow s for generating
a trans port s tream that provides a virtual c hannel m ap to the DTAs (Known as SCTE 65 tables ), and/or provides c ode updated
to the DTA’s (in a form at k now n as DSM-CC) s o that they c an be updated through the QAM c hannel trans port stream. The
c hoic es are DISABLED, MASTER (SC TE-18), SLAVE and DEMOD A..

DTA MODE : This menu c hoice allow s the us er to activate or deac tivate DTA m ode. The c hoic es are ENABLE and DISABLE. This
option w ill only be available w hen SLAVE is selec ted under DTA/EAS CONTROL m enu.

If D TA MODE is ENABLED, then an ASII m odule m us t be pres ent in the Mas ter EH24A / EH244 / EH244-IP to rec eive
the ASI s tream from your PC. W hether it is plugged into Module 5 or Module 6 slot depends on w hether the SDE24EAS is
als o required in the s ys tem or not.
All units at the headend are then dais y-c hained through ASI c onnec tions .
The Mas ter unit’s ASI OU TPU T c onnec tor goes to the ASI INPU T c onnec tor of the ASII m odule in the firs t Slave unit.
The AS I LOOP output c onnec tor of the ASII m odule in the firs t Slave unit goes to the ASI INPUT c onnec tor of the ASI
m odule in the next Slave unit.
Thes e ASI LOOPs c ontinue through all Slave units (MEQ1000As , EH24As , EH244s, and EH244-IPs ) at the headend.
There c an be s tandard SDE24s in s ome or all of the rem aining s lots of the Mas ter unit. If they are w anted to be s ent out
on the ASI output of the Mas ter unit, thes e s tream s c an be pick ed up from the ASI LOOP output c onnec tor of the ASII
m odule of the las t Slave unit in the c hain.

VERY IMPORTANT: When the SDE24E AS is used in s lot 6 of the Master un it, both enc oders in the SDE24E AS
must be set to the lowest encod ing b itr ate of any other SDE24 in the entire s ystem. Th is is the on ly way to m ake
sure that when the SDE24E AS’ stream replaces the origin al streams th at it will still f it into all the Q AM ch anne ls.

EAS MODE : EAS Control is provided by 1 of 2 m ethods:

Method 1 - By us ing the SDE24EAS m odule in a “Mas ter” EAS unit (EH24A / EH244 / EH244-IP, but not the MEQ1000A )
as m entioned above. This m odule has only a s ingle c omposite input ins tead of the 2 inputs of a s tandard SDE24. It is fed
by an external EAS Controller s ourc e, that then is enc oded by both enc oders in the SDE24EAS. W hen EAS is ac tivated,
the trans port s tream generated by the SDE24EAS is routed internally in the Mas ter unit and replac es the trans port
s tream s c om ing from the other plugged in SDE24s . This w ay all MPEG programs c oming out of the Mas ter unit have the
EAS video and audio on them . Note that w hen using this method only one SDE24EAS is required per headend, and is
plac ed into the Module 6 slot on the rear of the Mas ter EH24A / EH244 / EH244-IP. The MEQ1000A w ill need to be
placed in the SL AVE setting.

Method 2 - By us ing the new er digital s tandard for EAS (k now n as SCTE 18). In this m ode, rather than eac h MPEG
program being replac ed by the EAS video, ins tead w hen the EAS is ac tivated, a table is ins erted into the transport
s tream . This table tells any SCTE 18 c apable unit w hich RF c hannel to switc h to and w hic h MPEG program number to be-
gin dec oding. The rec eiving unit then sw itc hes to that program to dis play the EAS video and audio. W hen the EAS is de-
ac tivated, the rec eiving unit returns to its original c hannel.

For Instructions on how to set E AS p arameters ( inc lud ing: E AS MODE, E AS RF CH AN NEL, EAS MODUL ATION, E AS MPE G
PROGRAM #, E AS MAJOR CH ANNEL, and E AS MINOR CH ANNEL), p le ase see instruction m anu al for the Dr ake Product
being used as the E AS MASTER UNIT in your headend (EH24 A / EH244 / EH244-IP).

DEMOD A MODE :

Allows us ing DTA/EAS tables w hile using the MEQ1000A in a drop/add c onfiguration. In order for the DTA/EAS
tables rec eived in the drop/add c onfiguration to be utilized, the DTD1000 m us t be tuned to an RF c hannel from the Head

End that c ontains the des ired tables . Otherwis e the tables on the PID’s w ould be miss ing bec aus e they are not

ass oc iated w ith an ac tual program in the trans port s tream .
