gether the volume of each drop in a spray sample (volume is proportional to di­
ameter cubed), taking the cube root of this sum, and finally dividing by the num­
ber of drops. The Sauter mean diameter is a specialized parameter used pri­
marily in combustion applications. It measures the effective ratio of drop volume
to surface area.
