The “B” setting is useful in flash photo
graphy for lightening the subject’s back
ground. At this setting, the flash of the
Speedlite synchronizes with the opening of
the first shutter curtain.

When flashes other than the four special
Canon Speedlites are used with the A-1, the
digital readout will include the same infor
mation as in manual override. See p. 65.
However, since the aperture displayed has no
meaning in this case, it might cause less con
fusion to switch off the viewfinder display
lever.
