Setting Up a Storage Area Network
Hardware and Software Requirements
Your SAN environment needs to satisfy requirements in these areas:
•
Supported computers
•
Supported storage devices
•
Fibre Channel fabric, adapters, and switches
•
Ethernet network
•
Directory services (optional)
•
Outgoing mail service (optional)
Supported Computers
Xsan controller and client computers must meet these minimum requirements:
Systems
•
Xserve
•
Xserve G5
•
Power Mac G4 dual 800 MHz or faster
•
Power Mac G5
Memory
•
Clients should have a minimum of 256 MB of RAM.
•
Controllers should have a minimum of 512 MB of RAM. (For optimum performance,
add an additional 512 MB of RAM for each SAN volume hosted by the controller.)
Supported Operating Systems
•
Mac OS X v10.3; version 10.3.5 or later
•
Mac OS X Server v10.3; version 10.3.5 or later
Windows, AIX, IRIX, Linux, and Solaris clients must be running ADIC’s StorNext File
System version 2.4.
Supported Storage Devices
This guide assumes you are using Xserve RAID systems for your storage devices.
Important:
Be sure to install the latest firmware update on your Xserve RAID systems
before you use them with Xsan.
For demanding applications such as video editing, use Xserve RAID systems that have:
•
A full set of 14 Apple Drive Modules
•
512 MB of cache in each controller (1 GB total)
