Setting Up Your Server
Follow the instructions in this chapter to install the Mac OS X Server software, configure your
server using the setup assistants, and get basic services up and running.
Server System Requirements
You can install Mac OS X Server on any of these computers:
m
Xserve
m
Macintosh Server G4
m
Power Mac G4
m
Macintosh Server G3
m
Power Macintosh G3
m
iMac
m
eMac
The server must have
m
at least 128 megabytes (MB) of random access memory (RAM)
m
at least 4 gigabytes (GB) of unused disk space
A display and keyboard are optional. You can set up a server that has no display using an
administrator computer. See “Remote Installation” on page 8.
Overview of Installation and Setup Options
The Mac OS X Server software installer and setup assistants allow several approaches to
setting up a server. The approach you follow can depend on several factors.

If the server has a display and keyboard attached, you can install and set up locally. See
“Local Installation” on page 8 and “Local Setup” on page 10.
