Getting Started
Welcome to Mac OS X Server version 10.2. This guide will help you install the software and
get your server up and running quickly.
Setup Overview

If you’re new to servers, you may want to review the setup example in Chapter 2 before you
begin.

If you are currently using an older version of Mac OS X Server, AppleShare IP, or Macintosh
Manager, and you want to retain your current server configuration, review
Upgrading to
Mac OS X Server.

If you are setting up a remote server or a server with no display attached (a “headless” server
such as Xserve), set up an administrator computer from which you can set up the server. See
“Setting Up an Administrator Computer” on page 11.

Install Mac OS X Server on the server computer. See “Installing the Server Software” on page 8.

Run the Server Assistant and Open Directory Assistant. See “Using the Setup Assistants” on
page 9.

Set up the services you want your server to provide. See “Setting Up Basic Services” on page 12.
