In-band and out-of-band operations
RAID Manager operations can be performed using either the in-band method (XP24000/XP20000
Disk Array and earlier) or the out-of-band method (new on P9500).
•
In-band (host-based) method. RAID Manager commands are transferred from the client or
server to the command device in the storage system via the host fibre-channel interface. The
command device must be defined in the configuration definition file, as shown in the following
figure.

Out-of-band (LAN-based) method. RAID Manager commands are transferred from the client
or server to the virtual command device in the SVP via the LAN. The virtual command device
and the IP address of the SVP must be specified in the configuration definition file, as shown
in the following figure.
For specifying the command device and the virtual command device, you can enter up to 511
characters in a line.
The following figure shows a system configuration example and a setting example of a command
device and a virtual command device by the in-band and out-of-band methods.
