From the Program Menu enter the Modbus Addressing and Relay Setup screen. With dipswitch # 4 set to the
“OFF” position the first column header will be RTU instead of CH# (Figure 31). Set the 1600/6400
Secondary Port device # to the desired Modbus™ device number and press ‘Enter” to accept the change.

NOTE: Because the Modbus™ data is reported in 16 channel blocks, multiple 1600/6400 controllers on
the loop must have device numbers that follow the sequence shown above. Each controller must be
placed at a device address 4 higher than the last controller, with the Modbus™ RTU set at RTU=00 and
the address set at 01, with the device number set according to the example.

Modbus™ Register Detail:
Code 03 - Read Holding Registers, is the only code supported by the 1600/6400 controllers. Each controller
organizes the Modbus™ data into four groups of 16 channels. Each group resides at a different device # or ID.
The first group resides at the first device/ID number with each consecutive group at the next sequential
device/ID number. (I.e. Device 01 would also occupy device 02, 03 and device 04). Each group contains 21
holding registers that reflect the status of those 16 channels. The register data shown below is for the first 16
channels. The other three groups of 16 channels would have similar register data but would begin with the
next device or ID number, register 40000.
