If necessary, score around existing casing with the
utility knife. Carefully remove the interior trim with
the pry bar.

Remove the existing door by removing the hinge pins.
Starting at the bottom loosen the door jamb from the
opening with the pry bar. Once the door jamb is loose
lift both sides of the bottom up and away from the
opening.

Clean rough opening, remove nails and staples.

1

Temporarily fit the unit into the opening to check for
proper fit. The opening size should be approximately
1/2" larger than the pre-hung door unit, both height
and width.

Check the wall framing for plumb and square. If
the wall is 1/4" or less out of square and/or plumb
the door can still be installed. If the wall is more
than 1/4" out of square and/or plumb this could
cause future door hanging or swinging problems.
Correcting these issues should be considered before
proceeding to the next step.

Removing the Old Unit

Rough Opening and Door Preparation

Use a piece of scrap wood to protect the drywall from
the pry bar.

TIP

A reciprocal saw can also be run down the gap between
the jamb and stud to cut the nails.

TIP

Out of square/plumb wall framing conditions are one of
the most common reasons for door problems.
