BIOS SETUP

Updating Your BIOS

PHLASH.EXE is a Flash Memory Writer utility that updates the BIOS by uploading a new BIOS
file to the programmable flash ROM on the Notebook PC’s motherboard. This file works only in
DOS mode. To determine the BIOS version, check the code (e.g. BIOS Ver. XXXXX) displayed on
the upper left-hand corner of your screen just before entering BIOS setup (after pressing the F2
key). Larger numbers represent a newer BIOS version.

Creating a BIOS Update Floppy Disk

PHLASH works only in DOS mode. It will not work with DOS prompt in Windows and will not
work with certain memory drivers that may be loaded when you boot from your hard drive. It it
recommended that you reboot using a bootable floppy disk.

1.

Download an updated BIOS file from the Internet (WWW or FTP) (see Contact Information) and
decompress it to a bootable floppy disk.

2.

From the support CD, copy PHLASH, PLATFORM.BIN, and the original BIOS to the same
bootable floppy disk.

Making a Bootable Floppy Disk

Making a bootable floppy disk requires that system files be available to the system, therefore it is
necessary to do it from a bootable system. There are three methods in making a bootable diskette:

NOTE: In all cases, DO NOT copy AUTOEXEC.BAT & CONFIG.SYS to the floppy disk in order
to prevent loading drivers or utilities that may conflict with the BIOS update utility.

Use Windows format by right-clicking on the
floppy drive and selecting Format. Select the
option “Copy system files,” enter a label if
you wish, and click Start to begin.

Type FORMAT A:/S at the DOS prompt. (the
“/S” command transfers system files after
formating)

If you already have a floppy disk you would
like to make bootable without having to re-
format it, type SYS A: from the DOS prompt
to transfer system files.
