PREPARATION OF SURFACE PRIOR TO INSTALLATION
1) The mounting surface must be clean and free of all dirt, wax, and oil before you start your
installation. Wipe all areas with alcohol prep pad provided with this product.
2) Temperature should be between 60°F and 90°F during installation.
3) Position the LED tailgate strip in the area below the tailgate with the wires coming out on the left
side of the LED tailgate strip. Measure the area below your tailgate to find the center point and
put a mark there. Measure your LED tailgate strip and find the center point of it and mark
the center.
4) Peel off the protective backing of the adhesive mounting tabs. Lineup your center lines that you
marked below the tailgate and on the LED tailgate strip and mount. After mounting apply
pressure to ensure a good bond.
ELECTRICAL HOOKUP
.
There are two ways to connect the LED tailgate strip to your vehicle. If your vehicle has
a 4 wire flat trailer light connector, see #1, if your vehicle does NOT have a 4 wire flat
trailer light connector see #2.
#1) Vehicle WITH 4 wire flat trailer connector
The LED tailgate strip comes with a 4 wire male flat trailer connector. (See diagram) For easy
installation on a vehicle with pre-wired 4 wire flat female connector for a trailer simply run the
LED tailgate strip wires to the existing 4 wire flat female connector on your vehicle and plug it in.
Use care when running the wires and utilizing the tie wraps included to keep all wires from
hanging below the vehicle.
#2) Vehicle WITHOUT a 4 wire flat trailer connector
The LED tailgate strip can be hard wired to your vehicle using the 4 wire flat female trailer
connector provided with this kit. (See diagram) Please note there are two types of taillights on
late model vehicles.
A)Brake and turn signal are within 1 single bulb
Using the 4 wire female flat trail connector provided, identify each wire for the correct
function according to the 4 wire female flat trailer connector diagram.
1)Identify the running lights.
Black wire on the 4 wire female connector (provided) is
the running light wire. Turn on the running lights on the vehicle. Using a test light on the
wires coming out of either taillight harness mark the wire that lights up on your test light.
Attach the
black wire from the connector (provided) to that wire. (see diagram)
2)Identify the left turn signal light.
Red
wire on the 4 wire female connector (provided)
is the left turn signal wire. Turn on the left turn signal of the vehicle. Using a test light, find
the wire coming out of the taillight harness that lights the test light. Attach the
red
wire
from the connector (provided) to that wire. (see diagram)
3)Identify the right turn signal light.
Green
wire on the 4 wire female connector
(provided) is the right turn signal wire. Turn on the right turn signal of the vehicle. Using a
test light, find the wire coming out of the taillight harness that lights the test light. Attach the
green
wire from the connector (provided) to that wire. (see diagram)
4)Identify a ground.
Blue
wire on the 4 wire female connector (provided) is the ground wire.
Attach this wire to a good clean ground to your vehicle’s chassis. (see diagram)
B)Brake and turn signal are different bulbs.
(turn signal bulb will have an amber lens
instead of a red lens, brake light bulb will have a clear lens or sometimes a red lens)
Vehicles with separate brake light and turn signal bulbs have a five wire system instead of the four
wire found on other vehicles. Installing the LED Tailgate Strip on these vehicles requires an adapter
that is available at most auto parts or trailer supply stores. The adapter converts the five wire system
to a four wire system and also works for trailer wire connections. Fully read the instructions that
come with the adapter.
1) Identify the running lights.
Black wire on the 4 wire female connector (provided) is the
running light wire. Turn on the running lights on the vehicle. Using a test light on the wire
harness coming out of either taillight, find the wire that lights the test light. Attach the
black
wire from the 4 wire female connector (provided) to that wire. (see diagram)
2) Identify the brake light.
Have a helper push down on the brake pedal so the brake lights
are lit. Using a test light on the wire harness coming out of either taillight, find the wire that
lights the test light. Attach both the
red
wire (left turn signal) and the
green
wire (right turn
signal) from the 4 wire female connector (provided) to that wire. (see diagram)
