NOTE: PC2 memory, also known as DDR2 SDRAM, is not supported.
NOTE: When the 8-GB PC2700 DDR SDRAM DIMM Memory Kit (395409-B21) is installed, the Redundant
Fan Option Kit (293048-B21) must be installed (" Installing redundant hot-plug fans " on page 56 ).
Refer to "DIMM slots (on page 14 )" for DIMM slot locations and bank assignments.
DIMM installation guidelines
You must observe the following guidelines when installing additional memory:
• Always install memory in pairs of identical DIMMs.
• Install only ECC PC-3200 DDR 400 or PC2700 DDR 333 Registered SDRAM DIMMs that meet the
following specifications:
• Supply voltage: 2.6 V
• Bus width: 72 bits
• If installing 1-GB DIMMs, dual-rank DIMMs must be installed closest to the processor.
NOTE: Dual-rank DIMMs can be identified by 2R or 2R x8 on the DIMM label.
• Install DIMMs with the same speed.
• Install DIMMs into both slots within a single bank.
• Memory must be installed in pairs (banks) beginning with banks farthest away from each populated
processor (banks B and D).
• Install DIMMs with the smallest capacity in banks farthest from the processor.
• Memory banks for processor 1 must always be populated.
• For optimal performance, populate processor 2 memory banks.
• Processor 2 can be installed without memory.
• Any memory installed into banks for processor 2 can be used only if processor 2 is installed.
CAUTION: Always wear an antistatic wrist strap when working inside the server.
Installing DIMMs
1. Power down the server (on page 27 ).
2. Extend the server from the rack, if applicable (" Extend the server from the rack " on page 28 ).
3. Remove the access panel (" Removing the access panel " on page 29 ).
4. Open the DIMM slot latches.
