Common Field Properties

All fields have a number of common properties:

Field property

Description

Label

The label that identifies the field associated with the feature in a
custom-metadata section.

Tag

The unique name (within the schema) of the field in the database.
This is an XML tag; it cannot contain any spaces. Two or more fields
in a schema cannot have the same tag

Mandatory

The field must contain metadata; if it does not, no metadata in the
schema can be saved. In a custom-metadata section, a feature for
a mandatory field has a red border.

Recommended

The field should contain metadata, but this is not essential; the
metadata in the schema can be saved. In a custom-metadata
section, a feature for a mandatory field has a yellow border.

Alternatives

Enable the field to store metadata in an alternative element that is
part to the set selected in the

Alternates

box.

Default

The entry in the field before it is edited.

Some fields, depending on their feature type, have additional properties, as follows:

Text

A Text field has properties that affect the appearance and size of its text box.

Field property

Description

Display As

The text box may display text on just one line or on multiple lines.

Min Length

The minimum number of characters that the field must contain
before the schema metadata can be saved.

Max Length

The maximum number of characters the field can contain. Once
this number is reached, the field cannot accept any more
metadata.

Display Lines

The number of lines of text that are visible without scrolling.

Date

The Date field can store date and time values.

Field property

Description

Display As

The feature can display any of three items of information: date
only; time only; date and time together.

Min Date

The earliest date the field accepts.
