9 Managing connections
A connection refers to the association between a vNIC and a VSI type.
The network administrator and the server administrator can manage connections from VCM and
vManager, respectively.
Before the server administrator can manage connections on vManager, the network administrator must
register a plug-in on vManager based on virtualization software type. For more information about
plug-in registration, see "
Connection types
You can create a VEB connection or EVB connection for a VM. If both the vSwitch that the VM accesses
and the edge switch support EVB, an EVB connection is created. If either of them does not support EVB,
a VEB connection is created.
VEB connection
A VEB connection can be deployed when VRM obtains the access switch and access interface of the
VM. For more information, see "

You can manually deploy and undeploy a VEB connection.
VCM automatically deploys and undeploys a connection when VRM detects the following events:
•
VM migration—During a VM migration, VCM undeploys the connection and deletes the VSI Type
from the source edge switch, and then deploys the connection and applies the VSI Type to the
target edge switch.
•
VM removal—When a VM is deleted or VRM cannot identify the physical server to which the VM
belongs, VCM undeploys the connection.
NOTE:
To enable VRM to detect VM state changes, the physical server must be added to IMC and identified as a
virtual device by VRM.
EVB connection
You cannot manually deploy and undeploy an EVB connection.
VCM obtains the VM state through the requests sent by the edge switch, and then automatically deploys
and undeploys the connection when the following VM state changes occur:
•
VM startup—VCM deploys the connection when the VM starts.
•
VM shutdown—VCM undeploys the connection when the VM is shut down.
•
VM migration—VCM undeploys the connection from the source edge switch and then deploys the
connection on the target edge switch.
