practice associated with the Health and
Safety at Work Act, and the Control of
Pollution Act.
Many British Standards have international
equivalents (for example ISO 1996 Noise
Nuisance, ISO 1999 Noise Deafness,
etc), and most countries have adopted
their own national standards along similar
lines. Refer to the relevant standard for
detailed information about any particular
measurement procedure.
The measurement parameters available
on these sound level meters are as fol-
lows:
L
eq
Equivalent Continuous
Level (not CEL-414/3
and only octave band
L
eq
with CEL-328/3E),
SPL
Sound Pressure Level,
L
max
Maximum Level,
DUR
Duration over which
measurements taken,
L
Tm3
Maximum A-weighted
Average values taken
from a series of 3
second periods (A, B &
CEL-493/3),
L
Tm5
Maximum A-weighted
Average values taken
from a series of 5
second periods (A, B &
CEL-493/3),
L
OSHA
Averaged level with a
preset threshold and
q = 5 (C & D versions
but not CEL-414/3),
L
DOD
Averaged level with a
preset threshold and
q = 4 (C & D versions
but not CEL-414/3),
SEL
Sound Exposure Level
(not CEL-266/3,
CEL-328/3 or
CEL-414/3),
1SM
One Second Maximum
(not CEL-266/3,
CEL-328/3 or
CEL-414/3), requires a
link to be connected
(see Section 10.2), and
the instrument to be
set as for SPL
measurement,
31-16k
Octave bands centred
on indicated frequency
(CEL-266/3 and
CEL-328/3 only).
6.1General Procedures
Operation is commenced as follows.
1. Insert batteries and connect the
microphone and preamplifier
according to Chapter 4.
2. Check the battery condition by sliding
the ON-BAT-OFF switch to Bat.
The instrument takes approximately
10 s to perform its self test routine,
after which the battery voltage will
be indicated on the main digital
display. Batteries in good condition
should give between 5.8 and 6.2 V.
3
If the reading is close to the 3.2 V
level at which theLOW BATT
message is displayed, load fresh
batteries. (Refer to Section 4.1.)
4. If starting from cold, wait 90 seconds
for all measurment and integration
circuits to stabilize at their specified
accuracy.
5. Perform a field accuracy check, i.e.
calibrate the instrument acoustically
following the procedure given in
Chapter 5.
