SUFFOCATION
If a person is suffocating due to swallowing a foreign body or choking on food: slap the victim
firmly 5 times on the back. If symptoms persist, stand behind the victim, place your arms under
the victim’s, place your fist in the hollow of their abdomen (put one fist above the tummy button,
the other hand over your fist) and pull upwards and backwards towards yourself vigorously 5
times.
In a child of less than 1 year:
Hold the baby face down on your forearm, with its face sloping slightly towards the ground. Slap
it 5 times between the shoulder blades with the flat of your open hand. Before turning the child
over, remove the foreign body with your fingers, being careful not to push it down the child’s
throat. If this is not successful, turn the child onto its back, lie it head downwards on the
forearm and thigh. Compress at the middle of the chest with two fingers on the lower part of the
sternum, but without pressing on the lower extremity of the sternum.
ASPHYXIA
Tilt the victim’s head backwards and keep it in this position. Try to revive the victim using mouth
to mouth or mouth to nose resuscitation:
Take a deep breath. Blow continuously and firmly into the mouth or nose of the victim. Their
chest rises. Remove your mouth and their chest deflates. Repeat inflation 12 to 15 times. CALL
THE EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES.
Comment: there is no risk of catching the HIV virus while practising mouth to mouth on a victim.
