due to incorrect wiring, it is possible to damage any electronic device by applying power to its connections improperly.
Please make sure that when you connect any wire that it does not come into contact with other wires or components.
Read all directions carefully to insure that you don’t damage the unit and void your warranty because of incorrect
installation.
Power and Ground Connections
Please note on the op (three terminal) side of the control box that there are three connections to be made. The numbers 1
and 2 shown on the diagram at this point, indicate that you have a choice to make when hooking up the common wire.
For MOST installations, connection #1, shown with a solid line, should be made, connecting the common terminal to the
positive voltage input of the unit. When this connection is made, the effect is to supply a positive 12 volts to the N/O or
N/C contacts when the shutdown is activated. If your system requires a ground connection to be made at the relay
contacts (for example, if 12 volts positive was wired to your solenoid and it had to be grounded to operate), then you
would make a dotted connection shown as #2. The #2 connection will be used on very few systems. Call ISSPRO for
further explanation if you are unsure on how to wire the common terminal.
Once you have decided how to wire the common terminal (usually jumper it to “+” POS), then you are ready to complete
your installation. Connect the ground terminal to a good chassis ground. Then connect the positive terminal to an
ignition switched power source capable of handling 20 amps. Don’t forget to protect your system with a 20 amp fuse in
the power supply line. Don’t make these connections with power applied.
Final Test:
Your system should now be operational. However, you should test it first to make sure that your installation was sound
and that it will indeed protect your engine.
1. Make sure you have installed according to the diagram.
2. Start the engine and run for a minimum of one minute.
3. Connect input #1 or #2 to vehicle ground with a jumper. If you have installed the optional test switch all you have to
do is flip the switch to make a ground connection.
4. Your shutdown device should activate after 30 seconds with those units that have a delay built in. if no delay is used
the shutdown device should activate immediately.
5. If the engine does not shutdown, turn the engine off and double check all the connections and switches for proper
function and installation. If you are unable to locate a problem, return the control box only to ISSPRO for test and/or
repair.
6. To check operation of the water level system, drain the radiator water below the probe level. The system should
operate and shutdown. If you are installed the optional test switch, this test can be made by flipping the switch. If the
alarm does not operate, remove the probe and check for coating buildup. Clean the probe surfaces with a non-
abrasive cleaner and replace. Check the wiring to ensure that a ground is being supplied to the control box. If
malfunction continues, return the control box to ISSPRO for test and/or repair.
This test procedure should be done on a regular basis to insure that your engine is protected. We recommend monthly for
most applications, or perhaps when you change your engine oil.
General Notes:
1. When voltage is referred to in the directions it means either 12 volts or 24 volts DC, depending on the unit you have
purchased.
2. All R4020 to R4023 Shutdowns are designed for negative ground only.
3. We recommend that good quality ring terminals and wire be used for al connections. Do not use a wire gage that is
too light for the current that you will be working with.
4. Contact the factory of your local distributor if you are unsure about wiring or the correct function of the shutdown.
We at ISSPRO want to make sure that these directions answer any questions that you might have and also ensure that
