Installing the ISSPRO R8524 Tachometer
with Gear Tooth Pickup
Only four of the terminals on the rear of the R8524 tachometer are used in this installation. The
12VDC “+” and “-“ are connected to the R3112 Power Converter with the red insulated lead
going to the “+” terminal. The other terminals that are used are the “INPUTS” terminals which
have the sensor leads connected to them. Connect the black lead to the “YEL” terminal and the
white lead to the “GRN” screw. Shielded wire does not have to be used in most cases, however,
some electrically “noisy” environments may require it. If the tach reads abnormally high
(compare with a phototach test) or the tach shows a reading with the shaft stopped, use shielded
wire to connect the sensor to the inputs. Connect the shield and the black sensor wire together at
the “YEL” terminal.
Mount the sensor so that it is centered on the gear teeth. Adjust the sensor so that the tip is as
close to the gear teeth as possible, but has no chance of contact. A good installation will have
about 0.010” to 0.020” clearance between the gear teeth and the sensor tip.
