MEMORY CONSIDERATIONS

Note: Refer to your system owner’s manual for detailed instructions.

MEMORY INSTALLATION

1.

Open both ejector levers on each slot.

2.

Position a module over the slot so that the alignment notches on the
DIMM match the notches on the connector.

Caution: System parts are sensitive to electrostatic discharge and can be

damaged by the static charge you may carry. You should wear a
grounded wrist strap.

3.

Press firmly with your thumbs on both top ends of the module, applying
equal pressure until the module snaps into place. Lock the module in the
socket by pushing up on the ejector levers until they are in their upright
position.

Mixing Chipkill with non-Chipkill memory causes any system to operate in
non-Chipkill mode. Chipkill is an advanced form of ECC that can detect and
correct multiple-bit errors in servers.

The mainboard contains 4 DIMM slots.

DIMMs must be installed in matched pairs, starting with DIMM slots
1 & 2 (J113 & J111) and then slots 2 & 3 (J112 & J110).

If mixing single and dual rank DIMMs in the server, the dual rank
DIMMs must be installed in slots 1 & 2.

IntelliStation Z Pro 6223 and xSeries 226 8648

The mainboard contain 6 DIMM slots.

DIMMs must be installed in matched pairs, starting with DIMM slots
1 & 2, 3 & 4, and then 5 & 6.

Caution: Confirm the modules are fully and evenly seated in the slots.

Improper seating can cause electrical shorts that can damage
the memory and/or the system.

IBM does not support more than two dual-rank DIMMs and they
must be installed in slots 1 & 2 only.

4.

Continue to install the remaining memory modules until you have filled
the bank with two identical modules. Repeat the above steps for each
bank of memory you wish to install.

The mainboard contain 8 DIMM slots.

DIMMs must be installed in matched pairs, starting with DIMM slots
1 & 2, 3 & 4, 5 & 6, and then 7 & 8.

No more than the equivalent of 8 ranks total is supported in these
systems. This can be comprised of 4 dual-rank DIMMs, 2 dual-rank
and 4 single-rank DIMMs, or 8 single-rank DIMMs. Once the
equivalent of 8 ranks is reached, all remaining DIMM slots must be
empty.

5.

Reconnect the power cords and external cables, and turn on the system.

6.

After you reboot, ensure the system recognizes the new memory
configuration.

Refer to your user’s manual for the configuration of Online-Spare
Memory or Memory Mirroring.
