The following story shows how the camera company
has attained this enviable position.
Canon originated 37 years ago, in 1933, as a small
®oup of people devoted to the study and manufacture
of 35 mm still cameras. Two years later, in 1935, the
group successfully developed the first product which
embodied the results of its painstaking research
efforts. The camera was named KWANON. It was a
unique 35 mm camera with a high-speed focal piane
shutter (maxiimim shutter speed: 1/500th of a second)
and the fastest standard lens in those days (F 3.5).
