ready-mixed lightweight all purpose joint compound is not just another formula.
It is as different from any other joint treatment product on the market as a setting compound is from a drying
compound.
Plus 3 ready-mixed lightweight all-purpose joint compound looks different in the container and on the wall. It
feels a little different when applying with traditional tools. And it performs great. Consider the special qualities of
this unique product.
Velvety container
Initially it may look fluffy, spongy or frothy in the container. But it’s how it looks on the wall that counts.
appearance
A quick stir with a potato masher smooths out the mix in the container and prepares it for the wall.
Faster mixing
It receives water quickly. It mixes easily and it’s ready to go to work faster than other compounds. A potato
masher is all that’s needed. Drill mixing is O.K., but some precautions apply.
A.
Avoid using any drill over 400 RPM under load.
B.
Keep the drill paddles completely submerged while mixing. Partially exposed paddles entrap air that results
in craters.
The mixing difference is extremely important when using a semi-automatic taping tool such as a Bazooka.
Regardless of the initial look and feel of this joint compound, approximately the same amount of water should
be added to it as to regular ready-mixed joint compound.
Lighter application
Just as the material is lighter in weight, it applies “lighter,” too. It’s easier to move around, easier to lay and
easier to spread. Less tool pressure and energy are required for applications such as wiping down a tape
embedding coat. In fact, applying the same tool pressure required for traditional compounds can remove too
much compound and cause blisters (no compound) in high/low board joining.
When an automatic-metering tool is used for running tape, only one drive wheel should engage the surface
and the taping should flow in fairly straight, smooth sweeps. Improper adherence to these practices and/or
insufficient dilution of this product can intensify the reproduction of wheel blisters—a condition that occurs
naturally with regular ready-mixed compounds.
Opaque drying
In a wet state, the applied compound can appear translucent. However, when it dries, the compound becomes
opaque
and the effect is inconsequential.
Easier sanding
Less time, sanding pressure and energy are required to smooth the joint than with other compounds. It’s easy
to sand, but it’s also easy to oversand, removing too much material. Nothing coarser than 150-grit sandpaper
or 220-grit abrasive mesh cloth should be used.
Simpler work pattern
The biggest change for the mechanic is adjusting to the easier workability this product provides. The relative
difference in weight and application properties make working with Plus 3 ready-mixed lightweight all-purpose
joint compound more enjoyable and easier.
