Understanding how load frame components move – MTS Criterion Series 60 User Manual

1. You input an actuator up command by clicking the Up arrow in the Actuator Controls panel in the TWX
application.
2. The MTS Insight controller generates a signal that represents the direction and amount of extension
the actuator needs to travel to accommodate your command.
3. The MTS Insight controller generates this command and sends it to the servovalve. The servovalve
spool opens and allows more high-pressure hydraulic fluid (from the Hydraulic Power Supply) to push
on the actuator that is attached to the table and upper crosshead assembly.
4. The load-frame-mounted sensors send back a signal indicating the new position.
5. The encoder senses the amount of extension and sends this feedback to the digital controller, where
it is compared with your command.
The system automatically repeats Steps 2 through 5 until the desired command is achieved. The digital
controller continues to generate commands to the servovalve to maintain the commanded force on the
specimen.
Understanding How Load Frame Components
Move
When installing and removing the specimen and performing test setup, it is important to understand the
components in the load frame and know the control elements that apply to each component.
Upper Crosshead and Table Assembly
The test table is connected to the upper crosshead by the columns and moves as a single assembly in
response to the actuator piston below the table. To control the movement of the table and upper crosshead
assembly, you can use either:
•
The up and down buttons on the Actuator Control panel in the MTS TestSuite TW application.
•
The up and down buttons on the Model 494.05 Handset.
The table and upper crosshead assembly is independent of the lower crosshead.
