Auto-MDI
For port speeds of 10 or 100 Mbps, the ports are auto-MDI. They
automatically configure themselves as either MDI or MDI-X. This feature
allows you to use either straight-through or crossover twisted pair
cables to connect devices to the ports. For port speeds of 1000 Mbps,
you must use a straight through twisted pair cable.

Expansion Slots

The AT-GS924GB Gigabit Ethernet Switch has two Gigabit Interface
Converter (GBIC) expansion slots on the front panel that correspond to
Ports 23 and 24 respectfully. Each slot can accommodate one optional
fiber optic GBIC Ethernet module.

Note
If a GBIC module is installed in expansion slot Port 23 or 24, the
corresponding twisted pair Port 23 or 24 cannot be used.

A GBIC module is a fast and easy way to add an 1000 Mbps fiber optic
port to a Gigabit Ethernet switch. GBIC modules can be used to extend
the distance of your network, build a high-speed backbone network
between switches, or connect additional nodes to the network, such as
high-speed servers.

Figure 3 shows an example of a fiber optic GBIC module.
