About This Document
This user’s guide describes the HP NonStop™ Open System Services (OSS) user environment.
Specifically, this guide describes:

OSS environment and how it relates to the Guardian environment and to the HP NonStop
operating system
•
OSS file system, files, directories, pathnames, and the relationship between the OSS and
Guardian file systems
•
OSS shell (Korn shell); its features and environment
•
OSS user commands and utilities
•
How to run the OSS shell
•
Interoperability between the OSS environment and Guardian environment
•
How to perform fundamental user tasks in the OSS environment using the OSS commands
and utilities, including tutorials on how to:

Create files using the vi and ed editors
◦
Display, list, copy, move, link, print, remove, rename, and manage files and directories
◦
Set and change file permissions to control access
◦
Run user processes, monitor and cancel processes, display process information, manage
process input and output
◦
Locate files in the file system, search files for text patterns, compare and sort file contents
◦
Use the vi and ed text editors
The OSS Utilities product (T8626) provides the essential OSS user commands and utilities. This
guide is designed for the OSS user commands and utilities in the OSS Utilities product, which are
documented in the Open System Services Shell and Utilities Reference Manual. Beginning with the
J06.14 and H06.25 RVUs, the OSS Core Utilities product (T1202) provides additional Open

Supported Release Version Updates (RVUs)
This guide supports J06.03 and subsequent J-series RVUs, H06.03 and subsequent H-series RVUs,
and G06.15 and subsequent G-series RVUs until otherwise indicated by its replacement publication.
Intended Audience
The intended audience of this guide is anyone who works in the OSS environment: programmers,
system administrators, operators, and developers. This audience has varying knowledge of UNIX
and Guardian environments and the C language.
Unsupported Utilities
HP is not responsible for the proper functioning of unsupported utilities or facilities and will not
respond to product reports about them. Such utilities and facilities include those in the OSS
/bin/unsupported
directory. Use these utilities and facilities at your own risk.
