To prevent EXPLOSION when:
• INSTALLING A NEW BATTERY - dis-

connect negative cable from old bat-
tery first and connect to new battery
last.

• CONNECTING A BATTERY CHARG-

ER - Remove battery from welder by
disconnecting negative cable first,
then positive cable and battery
clamp. When reinstalling, connect
negative cable last. Keep well venti-

• USING A BOOSTER - connect posi-

negative lead to engine foot.

BATTERY ACID CAN BURN EYES AND
SKIN.

PREVENTING ELECTRICAL DAMAGE

1. When replacing, jumping, or otherwise connecting the
battery to the battery cables, the proper polarity must be
observed. Failure to observe the proper polarity could
result in damage to the charging circuit. The positive (+)
battery cable has a red terminal cover.

2. If the battery requires charging from an external charg-
er, disconnect the negative battery cable first and then the
positive battery cable before attaching the charger leads.
Failure to do so can result in damage to the internal
charger components. When reconnecting the cables, con-
nect the positive cable first and the negative cable last.

PREVENTING BATTERY DISCHARGE

If you have an ignition switch, turn it off when engine is
not running.

PREVENTING BATTERY BUCKLING

COMMANDER 500 CUMMINS

7. Inspect for holes and tears by looking through the
element toward a bright light. Check for damaged gas-
kets or dented metal parts. Do not reuse damaged ele-
ments. Protect element from dust and damage during
drying and storage.

8. Reinstall air filter element.

After six cleanings replace air filter. A cleaned filter will

have approximately 70% of the life of a new filter ele-
ment. A restricted filter element may not appear exces-
sively dirty.

FUEL FILTERS

When working on the fuel system

• Keep naked lights away, do not smoke !

• Do not spill fuel !

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The COMMANDER 500 CUMMINS is equipped with a
Fuel Filter located after the lift pump and before fuel
injectors. The procedure for changing the filter is as fol-
lows.

1. Close the fuel shutoff valve.

2. Clean the area around the fuel filter head. Remove

the filter. Clean the gasket surface of the filter head
and replace the o-ring.

3. Fill the clean filter with clean fuel, and lubricate the

o-ring seal with clean lubricating oil.

4. Install the filter as specified by the filter manufactur-

er.

Mechanical overtightening will distort the threads,
filter element seal or filter can.

COOLING SYSTEM

The COMMANDER 500 CUMMINS is equipped with a
pressure radiator. Keep the radiator cap tight to prevent
loss of coolant. Clean and flush the coolant system
periodically to prevent clogging the passage and over-
heating the engine. When antifreeze is needed, always
use the permanent type.
