1.4 Definitions
Cabinet: The cabinet refers to the metal frame of the display (back, bottom, top),
and may be expanded to include the end caps.
Column: A vertical line of pixels.
Controller Board: The controller board (in the “master” section) receives and
interprets the data from the ticker feed.
End Cap: A metal plate that covers each end of a ticker. End caps are found only on
“master” sections.
Ethernet: Ethernet is a standard communication interface that utilizes a local area
network (LAN). The maximum cable length is 100 meters.
Face Panel: The transparent polycarbonate panel that sits in front of the modules.
LED: A LED (Light Emitting Diode) is an electrical component that produces light.
LEDs produce the text that appears on the ticker display.
Module: A module is either a 16x40 or 24x40 array of LEDs. It is removable from
the display unit.
Pixel: A single point of light on a display. In the DAKTicker KE-1010, a pixel
consists of one LED.
RS232: RS232 is a standard PC communication type with a maximum cable length
of 25 feet (7.6 meters).
RS422: RS422 is a standard differential communication type with a maximum cable
length of 4,000 feet (1.2 kilometers).
Row: A horizontal line of pixels.
Shift Card: The shift card relays the signal from the controller board or module of
the previous section.
Signal Converter: The signal converter is a Daktronics supplied unit that converts
the data from RS232 to RS422.The signal converter is connected to the control PC
via a straight through serial cable.
