A thatch consisting of cut grass usuaiiy deveiops within a year
of laying a new iawn. The thatch cah soon be so dense as to
prevent water, nutrients and oxygen penetrating the iawn’s
roof system, resistance to wear and new growth subse-
quentiy weaken. Disease and drought resistance is reduced
with weeds and moss becoming dominant.
Scarification not only removes harmful thatch, it also reduces
the amount of moss and weeds. In addition the compacted
soil surface is loosened thus enabling it to breathe and
absorb water, oxygen and nutrients.
Due to the thinning out achieved by scarification the grass gains
increased living space and growth prospects.
Treatment of the lawn during the growing season allows the
grass to regenerate and spread onto thinner patches. A lawn
may be scarified several times a year.
Grassed areas subject to severe wear and/or regular mowing
may be scarified several times, preferably during late summer.
This prevents development of diseases during the winter.
Thatch torn up by scarification should be raked up and re
moved.
This treatment of the lawn will lift creeping weeds, it is there
fore adviseable to mow once more, collecting the final rem
nants in the mower's collection box.
After scarification is completed the lawn should receive a
balanced lawn fertiliser. This supplies the correct nutrients
required for vigorous new growth. Within three weeks the
lawn should be dense, green and resistant to wear.
During the period after scarification the grass is droughtsensi-
tive and should be watered regularly under dryer conditions.
(Every two or three days.) Lawns with large bare patches or
other damage should be resown.
