This stitch is very versatile and can be corded
or used as a topstitch as other reverse stitch
patterns.
SEAMS
The smocking stitch can be used to seam fine
gauze type fabrics or bulky sweater knits,
this results in less bulk for a finished % inch
seam. Follow the directions for overlook
seam on Page45. (Fig. 140)

ELASTIC THREAD SHIRRING
Cuffs and bodices of little girls dresses can be
shirred easily with the smocking stitch. Place
the right side of the garment down on the
bed of the machine. Place two strands of
elastic thread under the foot. Stretch the
elastic thread while sewing with the smocking
stitch to gather cuffs or bodice for a feminine
effect. (Fig. 141)

DECORATIVE EFFECTS - BASEBALL
1. Decide on the radius of the baseball to
determine the placement of the cello­
phane tape and thumbtack.
2. Pierce a piece of tape with a thumbtack
so the sticky side of tape, and flat side
of tack will be against the bed of the
machine,
3. Place tape with tack the desired dis­
tance from the needle as determined in
step 1. (Fig. 142)
4. On fabric, mark two perpendicular lines
to mark the center of the baseball. (Fig.
143)
5. Pierce center of baseball with tack.
6. Begin sewing and complete perfect
circle creating the outline of baseball,
7. This is great way to outline any circular
shape. Try some of the other patterns,
and make your own coasters and other
decorative uses. (Fig. 144)
